Curriculum

At Hatchford Brook the schemes of work are carefully planned to meet the needs of the National Curriculum and the demands of the revised frameworks for Literacy and Numeracy. We aim to equip our pupils with the basic tools of learning, giving Literacy and Numeracy high priority. We offer a full and broad education which not only develops the academic side of learning, but also the creative, physical and aesthetic aspects.

Great importance is placed on first hand experiences and practical tasks. Pupils are encouraged to become self-confident, self disciplined and courteous; to set their own high standards and learn to appreciate when they have attained them.

French is offered in Key Stage 2.

Teachers use a range of groupings to ensure that all children make the best possible progress and in Key Stage 2 pupils are set for Literacy and Numeracy. Groupings are regularly reviewed and children allocated according to the principle of ‘Best Fit’.

Aims of the Curriculum

  • To provide a stimulating and structured curriculum from which the children will discover, discriminate and draw conclusions and develop lively, enquiring minds
  • To enable pupils to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to their present needs in addition to preparing them for adult life and employment in a fast changing world
  • To provide open-ended situations necessitating research and experiences from which the children will learn to question, rationalise and develop self application
  • To foster a love of learning through a wide, stimulating and interesting curriculum with academic aims carefully matched to the individual’s ability and talents
  • To encourage an appreciation of the talents and needs of others and that in doing so they will grow in self-awareness, confidence and responsibility
  • To instil respect for religions and moral values and a tolerance and understanding of other races, religions and ways of life
  • To help pupils to understand the world in which they live and the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations
  • To help pupils appreciate human achievements and aspirations
  • To help pupils use and apply their language and number skills effectively in a variety of situations.
