The school was originally constructed in the 1940s but has been modernised, and has regularly been updated and improved to offer the best learning environment for our pupils. In July 2007 a purpose built nursery linking with the reception class is due for completion and will be receiving its first pupils in September 2007. This will offer 20 part time places and a separate privately run childcare facility called Playtime Pals will also operate. The school building as well as housing traditional classrooms, houses a Learning Zone which consists of a comprehensively stocked Library with both fiction and non fiction books as well as story tapes. Adjacent to this is a suite of computers linked to a network and the World Wide Web. Classrooms also have access to the World Wide Web and may benefit from Interactive White Board facilities (IWB). Small study areas exist for group tuition including an infant and junior reading area where books from the reading scheme are housed and accessed. The Hall has its own purpose built stage that is regularly used for school productions and events. A separate dining room means that the hall can be utilised at all times. The school hosts an Additionally Resourced Centre for pupils with Speech and Language difficulties. This is accessed by pupils from across the Borough. All children with special needs are catered for and the school has an excellent record of inclusion. Children enter the Early Years Department in the September that they reach three and progress through the school until they are eleven years of age when they transfer to a place at a Secondary School. The Foundation Key Stage/Key Stage 1 Department is small comprising of four classes, one per year group. This means that we are able to get to know each child individually and ensure that their early and most vital years of education are a positive experience. As the children transfer into Key Stage 2 extra classes are created to cater for children from our own Early Years Department and Valley Infant School. A comprehensive welcome pack is in place for all children entering the school both in reception and at Year 3 as well as mid-year intakes. Speech and Language Additionally Resourced Centre (ARC) The Speech and Language ARC is an integral part of the main school and forms part of the Specialist Inclusion Support Service (SISS). It provides full time education and regular speech therapy for a maximum of 16 pupils aged 4 to 11 years. ARC staff meet regularly with mainstream colleagues to plan for the curriculum delivery. All are seen as members of the school community and the same happy, caring and supportive environment exists. Signing and symbols are used in the ARC as part of a “Total Communication” approach to teaching to assist the development of expressive language, comprehension and word retrieval. The use of signing is encouraged throughout school. Aims and Philosophy The ARC function is to educate and provide support for those children whose primary difficulty is in speech and language and who will benefit from some degree of integration. Our intention is to help each child realise his/her full potential within a happy and caring environment. |
